Exxon Mobil Corporation Scholarships for Latinx Students

Exxon Mobil Corporation, the largest publicly traded international energy company, has partnered with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) to create fellowship opportunities in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) for Hispanic college students. Through HHF’s Latinos On Fast Track (LOFT) program, ExxonMobil seeks to nurture motivated college students across the country, with a passion for Engineering and Science.

Selected students will be exposed to a top-quality company by participating in this signature mentoring program. Each student will be paired up with an ExxonMobil engineer or scientist to learn how their knowledge and skills are applied in a corporate setting.

Fellowship Components

The Fellowship consists of five 1-hour meetings with a mentor (virtual or in person), participation in the Harvard-certified ExxonMobil mentee program (on-line), an exclusive curriculum to introduce Fellows to ExxonMobil and career opportunities, and a $1,000 educational grant. 
In addition, there exists the possibility to interview for ExxonMobil positions (internships/full-time) upon successful completion of the Fellowship.

Fellowship Requirements

This opportunity is highly competitive and open to freshman, sophomores, and juniors, attending a 4-year college or university.

Fellowship applicants with the following majors will be given priority:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Geoscience
  • Material Science and Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

Applicants with these majors will be considered also: Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mathematics, Petroleum Engineering, and Physics.

Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher

Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States with a valid Social Security

The Art of The Thank You Note

By now you’ve probably heard back from some of your REU’s. Once you formally accept your REU offer you are likely to start looking at flights or maybe get to work on the journal articles that you’ve been assigned.  But before you do those things be sure to let your recommenders know that you’ve been accepted to the summer research program.

Although you might think getting an REU is the finish line it’s not the finish line at all.  In fact, its just one of the hurdles that you’ll encounter that will get you to the finish line.  Since you’ll probably be applying for REU’s for next year (or maybe even graduate school) you’ll want to be sure to keep your support system in the loop. Be sure to let your recommenders know that their letter made a difference. So how do you do this?

I remember several years ago a colleague saw a photo of a student with her research poster on the website of a well-known undergraduate research conference.  Not only did the student not thank him for writing the letter but he had no clue that she had even gotten into the program.  Although it might seem minor taking the time to give gratitude to those who have helped you out along the way can pay huge dividends. 

A GOOD Way

Send individual emails to all of your recommenders.  In your email specifically thank them for taking the time to provide letters of recommendation and let them know where you’ll be going this summer and what you’ll be doing.

A Better Way

Write handwritten thank you cards and mail them individually to all of your recommenders.  Although it might seem old-fashioned receiving a hand written card is a nice touch. 

Here’s an example:

I’d like to thank you for taking the time to write me a letter of recommendation for my REU program.  I’m excited to let you know that I have been accepted to the (name of REU program) this summer. Program Description: The overarching goal of this NSF REU Site is to immerse students in a meaningful and highly interdisciplinary research environment within the structural engineering domain and to teach them that design does not end with construction. Instead, designing for safety embodies: quantifying potential load conditions, damage mechanics, and uncertainties; monitoring for anomalies during operations; processing this information through cyber-modeling via digital surrogates; and translating the information to actionable knowledge for improving current and future system designs. Cornell University ‘s Center for Transportation, Environment & Community Health is looking for students interested in transportation/civil engineering as it relates to environment and public health for the 2019 REU Program.

The chosen undergraduates taking part in this ten-week program will receive hands-on experience through research, with applications to transportation/civil engineering! The University of Washington (UW) Molecular Engineering Materials Center (MEM·C) coordinates research efforts among two colleges and five departments across UW’s campus and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to address major trans-disciplinary challenges in materials research.
