An exciting day of mentorship, hands-on activities, and networking as we strengthen the future of health care. Middle school and high school students (grades 6 through 12), college students, post-baccalaureate students, parents/guardians, educators, healthcare professionals and community leaders are all welcome! Students from all cultural backgrounds and all genders are welcome to attend!

Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Diversity and Inclusion

The goal of the Mass General Summer Research Trainee Program (SRTP) is to inspire students who are underrepresented in medicine (UiM) to consider careers in academic medicine by immersing them in cutting-edge research opportunities.

Alabama

The Summer Health Professions Education Program is a partnership between the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine (SOM), School of Dentistry (SOD), School of Optometry (SOO), and School of Health Professions (SHP), home to the Physician Assistant program. The program goal is to increase diversity in health professions by recruiting and preparing underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students for successful educational experiences and careers in health care.

California

Loma Linda University’s Undergraduate Training Program (UTP) at the Loma Linda School of Medicine is a nine-week summer research internship for undergraduate college and university students. The internship focuses on giving students practical lab research experience alongside distinguished faculty, while providing mentorship in support of their future academic and research goals.

The program supports our mission to eliminate health disparities and increase the number of basic biomedical and physician scientists from diverse backgrounds involved in research. Students in the program are paid a competitive hourly rate with support by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) at the National Institutes of Health.

Levels: Rising Sophomore or Junior

UCSF Summer Student Research Program 
“For over 40 years, the Summer Student Research Program has placed talented high school and college students from diverse backgrounds into local clinics and basic science labs to participate in active biomedical research projects. Formerly affiliated with CHORI, now fully integrated with the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, this summer program provides a one-on-one mentorship with health care providers and researchers, along with access to unique workshops, seminars, trainings, simulations, and networking opportunities. The program culminates in a formal research symposium in which each student presents their project findings to the scientific community, many of which continue on as future grants, publications, and advances in healthcare. The overall goal of the program is to stimulate interest in health sciences for under-represented students, arming them with professional skills and confidence, thereby improving their likelihood of success in STEM careers.”

University of California Los Angeles Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Nursing and Charles R. Drew University School of Nursing
The UCLA/ CDU SHPEP mission is to serve as a model learning community in which scholars examine a variety of healthcare issues affecting medically underserved communities through problem-based learning cases, lectures, clinical experiences, small-group discussions, and a simulated health disparities  project. Scholars will also improve their learning skills and strengthen their foundation in science. Upon completion of this six-week program, scholars will be more aware of the urgent need for health care professionals in medically underserved communities and of the educational pathways that lead to providing medical, dental, and nursing services to underserved populations.

Located in the city of Pomona, CA the Western University’s Summer Health Professions Education Program offers an innovative approach to academic enrichment in basic sciences through team-based learning. Western U SHPEP is a rigorously inter-professional program offered in a diverse and vibrant urban environment. Student learning of foundational science, inter-professional teamwork, health disparities, and healthcare policy will be driven by weekly clinical cases. The summer of 2024 will mark the 19th year of the SHPEP program at the University of Louisville. SHPEP at UofL introduces prospective medical, dental, nursing, and pharmacy scholars to the academic rigors of health professions education. Scholars will use team-based learning to integrate and apply the basic and social sciences centered on two major themes: Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease. Scholars will also work in inter-professional collaborative teams to develop and implement treatment plans with dental/medical/nursing/pharmacy applications.

Maryland

Summer Internship Program (SIP) at Johns Hopkins provides experience in research laboratories to students of diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented minority students, students from economically disadvantaged and underserved backgrounds and students with disabilities that have completed one – two or more years of college. The purpose of this exposure to biomedical and/or public health research is to encourage students to consider careers in science, medicine and public health. The program runs ten weeks and a stipend is provided. Housing is provided near the undergraduate campus; the University has a shuttle service that provides convenient transportation between the Johns Hopkins Medicine Institutions (JHMI) and the undergraduate campus

New York

The Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program at Cornell University is designed to give 25 premedical students deeper insights into the field of medicine, including issues that greatly affect the health of traditionally underserved groups. Through the experiences of laboratory or clinical research, the student learns how one pursues a specific research problem under the supervision of a faculty member, thus providing an early education into basic research techniques that could be applicable to any area of medicine. A lecture series explores topics in cardiovascular physiology, exposing the students to basic science concepts that are relevant to a more specific understanding of hypertension and cardiovascular disease, both of which are major problems in minority communities. The summer fellows attend a series of talks by minority physicians about various medical specialties, addressing issues of concern in these physician’s daily work plus views of the bigger picture in health care to minority communities. Shadowing physicians provide further exposure to the clinical facets of medicine. Students in the summer program receive information on the medical school admissions process, and counseling on financial planning for medical school and how to examine the financial aid package.

Gateways to the Laboratory Program for Freshmen and Sophomores
Spend 10 weeks living and studying in New York City

The mission of the Gateways to the Laboratory Program is to increase the number of students from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in medicine and science who are prepared to become competitive applicants, successful MD-PhD students, and future leaders in biomedical research and academic medicine. Participants will work independently on a research project at Weill Cornell Medicine, The Rockefeller University, or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

PULSE is a six week summer academic enrichment program for undergraduate students interested in pursuing a healthcare profession. This program provides academic, clinical, research and service learning opportunities with a focus on urban health needs. Developed by the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU), the PULSE program helps students become lifelong learners and empowers them to use their knowledge to make a difference in their communities.

The primary goal of PULSE is to provide students from underrepresented and/or educationally and financially disadvantaged backgrounds exposure to medical professions. PULSE is a full-day program that runs five days per week for six weeks and culminates with the PULSE Symposium. At the symposium, students formally present posters highlighting their summer work or research projects to faculty, family and friends.

North Carolina

The Medical Education Development (MED) Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an intensive educational experience and challenging opportunity to gain insight into the realities of attending medical or dental school.

The MED Program was established in 1974 and is designed to increase opportunities in the health professions for individuals who demonstrate educational promise and commitment to a health career but who have lacked the opportunity in the past in moving toward their professional goals. The MED Program is sponsored by the University of North Carolina Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, Health Careers Opportunities Programs (Division of Disadvantaged Assistance, Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources Administration) and the State of North Carolina. The program offers a structured summer curriculum at the level of professional education to increase the ability of advanced pre-professional candidates, especially those who are underrepresented, to compete successfully for admission to health professional schools.

University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) McGovern Medical School, School of Dentistry, and School of Nursing

SHPEP at the University of Washington is committed to increasing the diversity of the pool of health professionals thus improving access to quality healthcare. The University of Washington program involves rigorous academic enrichment through classes that provide a strong knowledge base in the basic foundational sciences and statistics. It is best suited for students completing their first year of college who are about to take these courses or those who have taken them already and feel that they could use some additional help mastering these subjects.
