Biomedical Engineering Opportunities

Students studying Biomedical engineering use principles of biology and engineering to make advances in medicine and the healthcare field as a whole. If BME is your field of interest then you have plethora of opportunities. Here are ten summer research programs for students interested in Biomedical Engineering.

University of California at San Diego

Fun Fact: In 1994 UC San San Diego founded the first Bioengineering Department
in the United States.

The Jacobs school of Engineering (JSOE) at UC San Diego hosts a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) summer program in Biomaterials. The objectives of the program are to train undergraduates in basic research through challenging biomaterial-related engineering projects performed with research mentors from engineering departments across JSOE. Research areas include tissue engineering and 3D printing, bio-inspired biomaterials, biomaterial-stem cell interaction, nanoparticles and drug delivery.

Fun Fact: Baylor College of Medicine has consistently been ranked
as the top Medical School in the state of Texas

National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and BioEngineering

University of Utah School of Medicine

Genomics Summer Research for Minorities (GSRM) internship provides a ten-week summer research for undergraduate students interested in genomics research, personalized medicine and biosciences. The paid-internship is funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) Research Education Program R25 and supported by the University of Utah Department of Pediatrics. The internship provides students with placement in world-class genomics research groups, tailored mentorship, professional development workshops and access to state-of-the-art equipment and technology.

City of Hope Eugene and Ruth Roberts Summer Student Academy

The primary goal of the Eugene and Ruth Roberts Summer Student Academy at City of Hope is to provide young people (high school and university students) with an opportunity for a “hands-on” research experience. This program seeks to find students possessing exceptional potential for performing biomedical research.

Summer Academy students design and work on their own research projects in areas of their specific interests. City of Hope faculty members act as mentors providing valuable guidance and support, while also encouraging independent thought and exploration. Summer students work closely with post-doctorates, graduate students, and lab personnel of the Irell & Manella
Graduate School of Biological Sciences.

National Institute of Health C-SOAR Program

Fun Fact: The National Institute of Health was founded in 1887 in New York.

NIH College Summer Opportunities to Advance Research (C-SOAR). The goal of the program is to encourage a diverse group of individuals to consider careers in the biomedical sciences (At the NIH “biomedical sciences” includes everything from behavioral and social sciences, through biology and chemistry, to physics, mathematical modeling, computational biology, and biostatistics
Students with disabilities; students who are Pell Grant-eligible; students who are enrolled in Tribal Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, or Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); students who identify as LGBTQ; and individuals disadvantaged by circumstances that have negatively impacted their educational opportunities, including recent natural disasters, are encouraged to apply to C-SOAR

National Institute of Health Summer Internship Program

The Summer Internship Program at NIEHS is part of the National Institutes of Health Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research (NIH SIP). NIEHS is located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Scientists at NIEHS are committed to sharing with students and educators the intensity, excitement, sense of discipline, and tremendous satisfaction that careers in science can impart to those who pursue them.

The Summer Internship Program provides internships to outstanding high school, undergraduate, and graduate students interested in pursuing careers in the biomedical/biological sciences to work on a research project that entails exposure to the latest biochemical, molecular, and analytical techniques in a given field.
