Dream Summer is an annual, 8-week, national fellowship of the UCLA Labor Center’s Dream Resource Center (DRC). Through Dream Summer, the DRC has provided close to 900 fellowship opportunities to immigrant youth and allies and has partnered with over 265 social justice organizations across the country. Dream Summer:

  • Empowers immigrant youth and allies to be the next generation of social justice leaders through leadership and professional development, movement building, and on-the-ground experience in social justice organizations.
  • Creates a safe and healing space for immigrant youth and allies to connect and build with one another.
  • Promotes an intersectional, cross-racial, and intergenerational approach to social justice that addresses the needs of immigrant communities.

    Dream Summer fellows receive a $7,000 fellowship award, leadership and professional development training, and become part of a national alumni network of close to 900 social justice leaders. Dream Summer is open to both experienced social justice leaders and those who wish to begin or strengthen their involvement in social justice.

    The fellowship is open to all immigrant youth, regardless of immigration status (undocumented youth, youth with DACA or TPS, etc. are all welcome to apply). Applicants do not need to be students at UCLA to qualify for the fellowship.

Energy Transition Institute at UMass Amherst


ETI is inviting students from a wide range of majors in and outside STEM to apply offering projects at the intersection of energy technology and social equity, in a wide range of disciplines from computer science and engineering through economics and history.

We encourage applications from students with no prior research experience. There is no minimum GPA requirement. Any student who is enrolled full-time or part-time in a 4-year college or university or community college in the U.S. may apply. This program is designed to be a welcoming and supportive environment for students from diverse backgrounds, especially those from traditionally marginalized communities.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) allows students to participate in hands-on research in the laboratory of an established researcher and APS member for 10 weeks. Students must have had less than nine months of prior laboratory experience.

Fellows have the opportunity to:

  • network with other APS Fellows interested in and conducting biomedical or basic research;
  • explore the nature of research and the scientific process;
  • investigate physiology career options, what it takes to find career success;
  • learn about scientific writing and draft a meeting abstract, learn about common ethical issues in figure and text preparation; and
  • pose their career questions to members of the APS

The Acoustical Society of America (ASA) will be running a 12-week PAID summer undergraduate research program for students interested in the area of Acoustics. This intensive summer program in acoustics is designed for under-represented undergraduate students from across the country.

University of Arkansas: REU Separations & Commercialization
The Separations & Commercialization REU program will offer research experiences in laboratories that are working towards the goals of improving separation efficiency and reducing separation processing costs to a diverse group of undergraduate students. Participants will interact with faculty and graduate students to plan and execute a 10-week research project. A unique component of this REU program is the commercialization assessment training (CAT) series that will prepare them to think about the potential commercialization of traditional hypothesis-driven research early in the process. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with industry leaders in the separation field through the CAT series, industrial mentorships, as well as industrial site visits locally and in Texas.

“The Buck Summer Scholars Program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to investigate insights into the critical molecular and biological drivers of aging as well as translation of that research into new therapies which will improve healthspan. Summer Scholar participants will conduct biomedical research to combat diseases of aging, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, macular degeneration, heart disease, and diabetes. Under the guidance of a scientific mentor, each Summer Scholar will be responsible for his or her own research project. The Program emphasizes both laboratory and communication skills training to develop well-rounded future scientists, healthcare professionals, and policy makers.”

Carnegie Mellon

Carnegie Mellon’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Software Engineering (REUSE) program is an opportunity for undergraduate students to spend a summer working with some of the world’s leading Software Engineering faculty researchers. A number of projects are available in diverse areas which may include automated bug repair, mining software repositories, green computing, requirements engineering, program analysis, programming languages, and usable programming tools. Accepted students will work closely with CMU faculty and researchers on research problems with the potential for publication and significant impact on the future practice of software engineering.

The program is interested in promoting research opportunities for students traditionally underrepresented in computer science, and for first- and second-year undergraduate students. Neither research experience nor advanced coursework in computer science or software engineering is required.

University of Nebraska Lincoln REU in Chemical Assemply 

This 10-week summer REU in Chemistry cultivates a learning environment that provokes students to ask, “What are the most important issues that face our society?” and then provides them with enough training that they can contribute to addressing those issues and to communicate what they’ve learned. Participants progress from undergraduate textbook learning to discovering and solving challenging research problems.

This REU offers a wide range of topics, including organic radicals, biochemical sensors, chemical biology, catalytic nanoparticles, drug-protein interactions, graphene nanoribbons, green chemistry, metabolomics, organic synthesis, and mechanically-responsive materials.

Data Science for Social Good 

Now in its eighth year, the program is open to graduate and junior/senior undergraduate students who are enrolled in a degree granting program in spring 2022.The DSSG program brings together teams of students, data scientists, and domain researchers to work on focused, collaborative projects for societal benefit. We are planning to run a hybrid program this year, in which some teams will work in-person on the campus of the University of Washington, and some teams will work remotely from wherever team members are based. Students will be part of a collaborative team working full-time on an applied research project that has concrete social relevance and impact. In addition to project work, students participate in a wide range of data science tutorials, discussion-based workshops, and subject matter talks with experts from outside the program. Students receive a total stipend of $9,000. The program runs from June  through August.

News - Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science

“The Transfer-to-Excellence (TTE) Summer Research Program is a competitive summer internship for California community college students. This is a residential program consisting of nine-weeks of hands-on research experience in the laboratories of UC Berkeley science and engineering professors. TTE interns also participate in enrichment activities to enhance their preparation and confidence to transfer to a four-year university and pursue a career that applies their technical education. This program is jointly funded by an NSF REU Site grant, the Hopper Dean Foundation, and Berkeley’s College of Engineering.”

This program is limited to students attending a California community college. 
The program is looking for students who will return to a California Community College in the fall of 2023 and will apply for transfer admission to a baccalaureate program in science or engineering in fall 2023.

Students will have completed two semester calculus courses, or three quarter calculus courses, by June 9, 2023.
Students will have completed three science or engineering courses, one of which has a laboratory component, by June 9, 2023.

EMORY UNIVERSITY

 Computational Mathematics for Data Science Summer 2024

“Subject to the approval of funding, the REU Site Computational Methods for Data Science within the Department of Mathematics at Emory University has several funded opportunities for undergraduate summer research. The site will be held in conjunction with the Emory Research Experience for Teachers that provides additional funding for in-service high school teachers.”

The site’s core activity is a six-week on-site research and training that will be hosted at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. This activity is preceded by a three-week virtual pre-REU/RET phase that focuses on team building, on-demand teaching of advanced mathematical concepts, and finalizing the design of the research projects. During the on-campus phase, the teams will work on their research project and receive mentorship from faculty, postdocs, and graduate students. The pre-REU/RET phase will start on May 24 and the on-campus phase will begin on June 14.

This program particularly encourage women, students from underrepresented groups, first-generation college students, and institutions where research programs in STEM are limited to apply.

ASPB Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships Application 

The American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) fund promising undergraduate students so they can conduct research in plant biology during the early part of their college careers. SURF recipients must present their research at ASPB’s annual Plant Biology meeting in the year following the fellowship award.

Students must secure a mentor 
Faculty Mentors – Students must secure a mentor before submitting an application. The proposed research project must be pursued in the mentor’s laboratory. Mentors must be a member of ASPB, have an ongoing research program of high scientific merit, and demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate education and research. Mentors are expected to attend Plant Biology 2022 in Portland, OR with their SURF student.

The National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site: Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Research for Social Change is now recruiting undergraduates for the paid 9-week summer research experience at The University of Texas at Austin Texas Advanced Computing Center. Students gain skills in advanced programming and problem solving to conduct research in engineering, science, and computational medicine. The Summer Lando/NSF REU is for outstanding national and international undergraduate students. The Stanford Summer Research Program is an umbrella program that hosts students who are funded through various sources, including the Amgen Scholars Program, the Stanford Genetics Department, and the Stanford Medicine Dean’s Office.

STANFORD MEDICINE CARDIOVASCULAR INSITUTE

In this ten-week program students will work on cardiovascular research with Stanford faculty on research supported by the American Heart Association, The National Institutes of Health, and the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. Participants will receive a stipend for their work.
