Dream Summer is an annual, 8-week, national fellowship of the UCLA Labor Center’s Dream Resource Center (DRC). Through Dream Summer, the DRC has provided close to 900 fellowship opportunities to immigrant youth and allies and has partnered with over 265 social justice organizations across the country. Dream Summer:

• Empowers immigrant youth and allies to be the next generation of social justice leaders through leadership and professional development, movement building, and on-the-ground experience in social justice organizations.
• Creates a safe and healing space for immigrant youth and allies to connect and build with one another.
• Promotes an intersectional, cross-racial, and intergenerational approach to social justice that addresses the needs of immigrant communities.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) allows students to participate in hands-on research in the laboratory of an established researcher and APS member for 10 weeks. Students must have had less than nine months of prior laboratory experience.

Fellows have the opportunity to:

• network with other APS Fellows interested in and conducting biomedical or basic research;
• explore the nature of research and the scientific process;
• investigate physiology career options, what it takes to find career success;
• learn about scientific writing and draft a meeting abstract, learn about common ethical issues in figure and text preparation; and

Data Science for Social Good 

Now in its eighth year, the program is open to graduate and junior/senior undergraduate students who are enrolled in a degree granting program in spring 2022.The DSSG program brings together teams of students, data scientists, and domain researchers to work on focused, collaborative projects for societal benefit. We are planning to run a hybrid program this year, in which some teams will work in-person on the campus of the University of Washington, and some teams will work remotely from wherever team members are based. Students will be part of a collaborative team working full-time on an applied research project that has concrete social relevance and impact. In addition to project work, students participate in a wide range of data science tutorials, discussion-based workshops, and subject matter talks with experts from outside the program. Students receive a total stipend of $9,000. The program runs from June  through August.

“The Transfer-to-Excellence (TTE) Summer Research Program is a competitive summer internship for California community college students. This is a residential program consisting of nine-weeks of hands-on research experience in the laboratories of UC Berkeley science and engineering professors. EMORY UNIVERSITY

 Computational Mathematics for Data Science Summer 2024

“Subject to the approval of funding, the REU Site Computational Methods for Data Science within the Department of Mathematics at Emory University has several funded opportunities for undergraduate summer research. The site will be held in conjunction with the Emory Research Experience for Teachers that provides additional funding for in-service high school teachers.”

The site’s core activity is a six-week on-site research and training that will be hosted at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. This activity is preceded by a three-week virtual pre-REU/RET phase that focuses on team building, on-demand teaching of advanced mathematical concepts, and finalizing the design of the research projects. During the on-campus phase, the teams will work on their research project and receive mentorship from faculty, postdocs, and graduate students. The pre-REU/RET phase will start on May 24 and the on-campus phase will begin on June 14.

This program particularly encourage women, students from underrepresented groups, first-generation college students, and institutions where research programs in STEM are limited to apply.

ASPB Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships Application 

The American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) fund promising undergraduate students so they can conduct research in plant biology during the early part of their college careers. SURF recipients must present their research at ASPB’s annual Plant Biology meeting in the year following the fellowship award.

Students must secure a mentor 
Faculty Mentors – Students must secure a mentor before submitting an application. The proposed research project must be pursued in the mentor’s laboratory. Mentors must be a member of ASPB, have an ongoing research program of high scientific merit, and demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate education and research. STANFORD MEDICINE CARDIOVASCULAR INSITUTE

In this ten-week program students will work on cardiovascular research with Stanford faculty on research supported by the American Heart Association, The National Institutes of Health, and the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. Participants will receive a stipend for their work.
