Luck = (Preparation + Opportunity)
March 17th it’s St. Patrick’s Day. A cultural and religious holiday celebrated on March 17th commemorating the Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Wearing green, shamrock decorations and celebrating the Luck of the Irish with visions of a pot of gold to symbolize luck. But what is luck exactly? Luck is a concept often associated with chance or fortune when a desirable outcome occurs perhaps unexpectedly but when you think about luck. Is it really chance?
If we think of Roman philosopher Seneca’s description of luck “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity” then is it really unexpected when a desirable outcome occurs. If you’re an undergraduate think about what preparation looks like? It’s taking classes, working on projects, struggling and excelling. All of the things that you are doing now are preparing you for opportunities. and in the spirit of St. Patrick’s day today is your lucky day because here are some opportunities that you can apply to with upcoming deadlines. The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities has partnered with the United Health Foundation, the philanthropic foundation of UnitedHealth Group, to offer 110 Diversity in Health Care Scholarships in the amount of $5,000 per year ($2,500 per semester).
Applications are currently being accepted from full-time sophomore, junior or graduate students who are pursuing degrees (associate, bachelor, master, doctorate) that will lead to careers as clinical professionals that may include physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, certified nurse midwife, nurse, pharmacist, dentist, social worker, addiction counselor, clinical psychologist or related clinical profession.

Portland State 
Virtual NSF REU Computational Modeling Serving Portland!
The intellectual focus of this virtual REU site is computational modeling to serve and enhance Portland (OR) and its greater region. Students will be involved in multi-disciplinary, community-based research projects and trained in computational thinking across different disciplines. In doing so, they will gain an understanding of the potential and limits of these tools and how they can serve diverse communities.
Portland State University (PSU), with its NSF-funded Portland Institute for Computational Science (PICS), is ideally suited for this REU site as it has developed a reputation as a national model for urban universities that enhance their region by working with partners to solve problems. The activities of this REU Site will involve a 2-week training followed by an 8-week research project completed under a faculty mentor’s guidance and with the involvement of a community partner.

Interdisciplinary Computational Biology (iCompBio)
The about 10-week iCompBio REU focuses on interdisciplinary computational biology training to undergraduates in science, technology, engineering, math, and other related fields. A one-week computing bootcamp will be provided to teach students essential data science using R, and advanced data processing and deep learning methods using Python. Each student will be jointly mentored by a computer science mentor and a biology mentor. The computing training includes coding, modeling, simulation, deep learning neural networks, computer vision, parallel computing, statistics, data visualization, and mobile App development.

International Research Opportunity
The BIOFLOW IRES Program provides unique research opportunities to U.S. students in the vibrant fields of biomimicry and bio-inspired flow research for ten weeks in Summer 2024. IRES students will be integrated into existing research communities at the Center for Computational and Integrative Biology (CCIB) at Rutgers University–Camden, before receiving international research training at Adolfo Ibañez University in Santiago, Chile. The Nanophotonics, Quantum Photonics, and Vision/Biomedical Optics REU at University of Rochester aims to create a well-defined pipeline to a career in photonics for REU participants. There is a particular focus on underrepresented demographics, undergraduates from colleges without strong photonics research programs, and community college students—all of whom might not otherwise recognize photonics as a possible career path. This program will engage participating students in the frontiers of photonics research while at the same time providing them with experiences to recognize the excellent career opportunities, both academic and industry based, available in photonics. The host department is the university’s world-renowned Institute of Optics, located in the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. REU participants will benefit from the Institute’s Summer School, its Industrial Associates program, and its strong ties with the local Rochester photonics industry.

Fostering Inclusive Excellence at the Texas A&M Cyclotron Institute
The Texas A&M Cyclotron Institute, in conjunction with the National Science Foundation, is serving as a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site during the summer of 2024. This REU site focuses on research in nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry. Students will have the opportunity to work closely with internationally renowned scientists at a major university-based nuclear facility. Undergraduates will gain research experience by carrying out specific projects under the direct supervision of Physics/Chemistry faculty at the Cyclotron Institute. Weekly discussions on forefront areas of Nuclear Science will be led by Institute faculty. Students will have the opportunity to share their work via an oral presentation and poster session in house.

University of Hawaii DNA-Based Discoveries in Hawaii’s Biodiversity
Participants in the Summer 2024 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) will take advantage of ongoing research into the evolution, ecology, and conservation of Hawaiʻi’s native land snails. Participants will use integrative approaches, including high-throughput sequencing, field, ecology techniques, and captive rearing experiments to better understand the dietary ecology and conservation requirements for threatened land snails. In addition, participants will be actively involved in science curriculum development for K-12 applications in partnership with teachers from Hawaii’s public schools. REU participants will be mentored by scientists at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum and work with partners from the Department of Education to help develop and deliver novel curriculum based on the summer research experience.

Pennsylvania State University- University Park Remote Program
This short course is a training program to develop programing, numerical modeling, and data science skills for undergraduates in the physical sciences. The course is intended for students at the beginner to intermediate level with scientific programming; no prior programming experience is required. The short course will be run remotely, with student participants learning from recorded lectures, then working on programming and data visualization exercises under the supervision of the instructor over zoom. Students can participate from anywhere as long as they have a stable internet connection.
Students in the course will develop programming, modeling, and data science skills that are broadly applicable across the physical sciences and related field. The course will use example data sets and models from cutting edge research in the Geosciences; student participants will therefore gain experience and insight into fundamental open research questions in Geosciences.
The program will run for two weeks in July, July 8-19, 2024, on weekdays. Student participants will receive a paid stipend of $600 per week, and will complete an independent project to cap off the course. During the short course, students should expect to dedicate 4-5 hours each day to the course material. This will include time to watch recorded lectures and to join virtual “lab” exercises with Prof. Foley to work on programming exercises. These live virtual “labs” will be held in the afternoons (Eastern daylight time) during the short course.
Student participants can apply to come to Penn State in person in summer 2025 for a summer long REU internship.

University of Central Florida Research in Materials for Energy Applications
This REU site offers research training to highly motivated undergraduate students within the common theme of novel materials for energy applications. Three specific areas within this theme are targeted: 1) Materials for catalysis; 2) Quantum materials for energy needs; and 3) Transparent conducting thin films for photovoltaics.
Students will gain hands-on training in topics such as synthesis of two-dimensional nanostructured materials and ultrathin films, material characterization, single-atom catalysts, nanostructured materials for electrocatalysis, topological quantum materials, and computational design of materials for energy applications. In addition to research experience, students will benefit from training in critical thinking, data science and machine learning, ethics and scientific integrity, written research communication, scientific presentations (poster and oral), formulation of research hypotheses, and framing of research questions with informed knowledge of key literature in the field.
The program seeks to to support undergraduates students majoring in physics, chemistry, or materials science who have just completed their freshman or sophomore years at an institution of higher education and are working toward a 4-year undergraduate degree. Priority will be given to under-represented students in STEM who have had limited or no previous research experience, and who are very excited about the possibility of a career in STEM. Special consideration will be given to veterans, non-traditional students (over 30 years old), students with disabilities, and students who are the first in their families to attend college/university.

The main goal of the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Collaborative Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site is to increase undergraduate participation in research projects on technologies that lead to the development of Smart Personal Protective Equipment (SMAPP). The research projects on material for protective equipment, heat flux measurement in fire conditions, and human-robot interaction in dangerous environments will be conducted at the Division of Engineering Technology (DET), Oklahoma State University (OSU), Stillwater, OK. The projects on wireless sensor development, circuit design, and artificial intelligence for human health monitoring will be offered at Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), Huntsville, AL. REU Site: STEM for Plant Health
Sustainable agriculture to meet growing demands under increasing climate variability is both a problem and an opportunity for a range of interdisciplinary research approaches. The Plant-STEM REU introduces participants to research projects in laboratories, research greenhouses, and field sites that investigate the numerous inputs that influence plant health. Mentors come from the Biological Engineering, Biology, Plants Soils & Climate, Environmental Engineering, and Chemistry and Biochemistry departments housed in three different colleges (Engineering, Agriculture, Science). Complex problems require a broad range of diverse ideas and approaches to solve. Sustainable crop production is challenged by a range of external pressures, including diminished soil health, temperature extremes of increasing severity and duration, pathogens and invasive species, climate influence on pollinators, and changes in precipitation patterns and water availability.

UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Researchers at UC San Diego are combining biological control with 3D printing to engineer living surfaces, while examining the ethical, legal, and social implications. 4-6 students will be selected for a paid 6-10 week summer research experience followed by continued engagement through the school year. Students will receive hands-on experience with research and scientific communication and will gain exposure to scientific careers in academia and industry. Interns will be paired with graduate students, meet regularly with faculty advisors, join weekly lab meetings, and present their work as a poster at a national conference.

Mississippi State University Intelligent Edge Computing Systems REU
Intelligent Edge Computing Systems (iEDGE), ubiquitous in our everyday lives and involving many areas of CISE, provide an ideal platform for research and training for this Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site. Typically, iEDGE comprises various interacting elements with physical inputs and outputs, communicating through various mediums and controlled by software. Implementing and integrating these components require knowledge taught in early Computer, Information Science, and Engineering (CISE) courses (e.g., computer programming and digital design) and advanced courses (e.g., computer networks, computer architecture, communications, and controls). Consequently, REU participants with various backgrounds and experiences will have a platform to integrate and develop practical, real-world solutions. The projects will generate new knowledge by creating solutions involving new computing systems (e.g., sensors and control systems) and applying and testing existing computing systems in new contexts.

Assistive Technologies for People with Disabilities
Ten research assistantships are currently available for qualified undergraduate sophomore, junior and senior computer science and engineering students to participate in research in the field of assistive technologies for people with disabilities. The program will be conducted at an NSF-supported REU Site in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington (CSE@UTA). In this project, the CSE Department, in partnership with several other departments at UTA, will offer a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program focusing on assistive attitudinal, architectural, and technological – in accessing employment, navigating public spaces, freely communicating, and living independently. During this summer, each student will be working in a multi-disciplinary setting and exposed to innovative and novel inter-disciplinary projects through research and prototyping.

– A Community Based Participatory Research Experience for Undergraduates
The REU on Sustainable Land and Water Resources introduces undergraduate students to the key elements of research on land and water resources that are essential to improving management practices, with a focus on community-based participatory research and diverse interdisciplinary research teams. Students work on one of three teams on projects that explore the integrated community of the Earth’s land and water, including its living beings and relatives – plants, animals, and people. This opportunity is open to students from a diverse range of physical science, natural science, computational and engineering sciences, mathematics, and social science disciplines.

Research Experience for Undergraduates in Computer Vision
This year’s REU site will be held in-person at UCF’s Main Campus in Orlando, Florida. Students will begin the summer program with a two week introductory course in classical and modern Computer Vision techniques. The course will focus on both the theory behind Computer Vision and the hands-on skills required to put that theory into action (e.g. learning/practicing Python, running experiments in a Linux based GPU cluster, etc.). The goal of this introductory course is to provide students with a level of “working” knowledge in the field so that they may conduct and participate in engaging research for the remainder of the summer.

The SFI Undergraduate Complexity Research (UCR) program provides a 10-week residential experience in complex systems science for undergraduate students. Students develop and carry out an independent research project in collaboration with an SFI mentor and as a member of the supportive UCR community. Students learn how to combine theory, methods, and data from the physical, natural, and social sciences to ask big questions about real-world complex systems using the rigorous methods employed at SFI. Through a series of seminars and workshops, students enhance their skills as researchers and prepare for the next steps in their academic and professional journeys. REU: IDEA Incubator for porous materials – University of Kansas
The IDEA Incubator is an exciting program that seeks to nurture innovations in porous materials by ‘Integrating Discovery, Engineering and Art’ (IDEA). Students will participate in ‘unseminars’ designed to improve scientific communication to a wide range of audiences through art. Workshops will bridge engineering and art through a variety of forms such as print screening, drawings, storyboards, and more. These sessions will build student confidence and enhance their public speaking skills. The education component of this REU utilizes art as a tool to help students contextualize their research projects with a sense of scale.
The program strongly encourages students from minority serving institutions and community colleges to apply. Women, minorities, and students with disabilities are also encouraged to apply. Last Saturday a friend texted me and said, “we’re going to the movies at 6 pm. “Okay,” I texted back. After working three weekends in a row delirium had finally set in, however, I was feeling spontaneous and the thought of a movie was appealing. We bought our popcorn and as we sat in the theater it dawned on me I had no idea what movie we were seeing. “What are we watching?” I said.
“It’s a surprise,” was his response. Then without any further ado I saw on the big screen the iconic blue text “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..”
“Star Wars!” I shouted much to the chagrin of my fellow moviegoers.
“Return of the Jedi.” he clarified. I was giddy!!
I love the Star Wars movies and if you do too then you know that today is a very special day. I’d like to celebrate Star Wars Day with some classic quotes from the film and how they might be relevant to you as a student.
Like Darth Vader I generally always wear black but this isn’t about me, this is about you. It’s May and you’re worried you haven’t landed an REU just yet and you’re beginning to lose faith. Have a little compassion. Even if you don’t mean it snarky comments like, ‘What you didn’t learn in high school?’ exude a lack of compassion. If someone is asking a question they are trying to understand and thus trying to learn, isn’t that the point? Whether you are in class, in a study group, or in the lab everyone at some point has experienced imposter syndrome, be like a Jedi and have some compassion. In other words don’t be a “half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder!”

When someone looks at your class schedule and says something like this, take it to heart. Chances are they aren’t doubting your capabilities, instead they are likely trying to convey that you have a packed schedule which likely doesn’t give you much time for self-care which is essential to learning. My philosophy has always been “under commit and overdeliver” for a reason.
College is a series of goodbyes all along the way. Maybe you’re graduating and are sad you’re not going to see your college friends. Maybe you’re leaving for an internship or REU this summer. Every single person in your life who makes an imprint is never really gone. Chances these special friendships brought out the best in you. Maybe you had a professor or a mentor who really inspired you even if you won’t see them regularly like you once did, their teachings and what they brought out in you will always be and thus as Luke said, “No one’s ever really gone.”

Long ago in a galaxy not so far away I told someone I wanted to create REU Finder they told me it was a terrible idea. They said,” No one’s going to use it. They already have websites like that. It’s a waste of your time.” My analytics would suggest otherwise. Have you ever had someone doubt you? When you don’t have a strong support system you must make it your goal to find one. This is paramount and in the event that you don’t have one let me tell you, you are capable and you will achieve your goals. Maybe the path will be bumpy and maybe the path will take long but nevertheless you will accomplish what you set out to do. I did and I am glad I didn’t listen to naysayers.

Developing Self-drive Algorithms for Electric Vehicles at Lawrence Technological University in Collaboration with Michigan State University.

This Site focuses on the cybersecurity research for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The site integrates fundamental and state-of-the-art cybersecurity research using UAVs as the platform. Participants will join the Cybersecurity and Assured Systems Engineering (CyBASE) Center and the Wireless Devices and Electromagnetics (WiDE) lab for research. REU participants will engage in faculty-led projects such as UAV cyber-attacks, UAV cyber defense mechanisms, privacy protection methods for UAV communications, and Physical Layer-based cybersecurity. By conducting diverse but coherent research projects, participants will acquire extensive knowledge and practical experience in cybersecurity research for UA.

The REU Program in Industrial Mathematics and Statistics started at WPI in 1998 with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF). It was the first mathematics REU program in the US that exclusively involved students in real-world projects sponsored by corporate partners.

This program seeks recent college graduates for two-year post-bac fellowships in genomics and data science. Through supportive mentorship, trainees will become valuable members of a PI’s lab contributing to the research program, and over time they will undertake an independent project.
